One-Third of Detroit’s Best Schools are Charters
Lansing, MI (Vocus) September 15, 2009
As the new school year begins, 36 public charter schools are being recognized for excellence and will receive grants of up to $ 50,000 per school. These schools make up one-third of the highest-performing schools in Detroit, according to The Skillman Foundation’s “Good Schools: Making the Grade” program, which will award $ 1.7 million in grants to 102 schools in Detroit this year.
The Skillman Foundation’s goal is to assure that quality education be made available to every student. In the past 10 years the Skillman Foundation has worked to improve education in Detroit through a wide variety of projects and a $ 50 million investment.
The four criteria for the grant program are an increase in student achievement, improvement on school readiness, increases in high school graduation and college enrollment rates and innovation of good, small high schools.
“The Skillman Foundation cares about one thing–and that’s creating quality schools for all kids–regardless of who runs them,” said Dan Quisenberry, president of the Michigan Association of Public School Academies (MAPSA). “We appreciate their recognition of these high-performing public charter schools in Detroit.”
